Child tax benefit loans in Canada: eligibility explained
By NovaCash · Updated September 22, 2026
Learn what a child tax benefit loan means and why NovaCash does not count child tax credits as qualifying income before considering an application.

A “child tax loan” is a marketing term for a loan offered to people who receive family benefits. It is not a Canada Revenue Agency loan or a government-funded advance. At NovaCash, child tax credits are not qualifying income for a loan application.
Receiving the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) and having qualifying income are separate questions. Before requesting a fast loan of $300 to $2,000, check which income your application would rely on and whether repayments would leave enough for your family's essential expenses.
The CCB is a benefit, not a loan
The CCB is a tax-free monthly payment to eligible families to help with the cost of raising children under 18. The amount depends on factors including family circumstances and adjusted family net income. Check the official CCB overview for the rules that apply to your family.
A private loan is a separate contract. The lender sets its eligibility requirements and provides repayment terms. A label such as “child tax loan” does not mean the government recommends the lender, guarantees the loan or will help repay it.
Which income qualifies at NovaCash?
NovaCash's eligibility criteria include being at least 18, being a Canadian citizen, receiving at least $1,200 a month by direct deposit, having held a job for more than three months, not being in a bankruptcy process and being able to repay. Self-employment, child tax credits, retirement savings, student loans and social assistance are among the exclusions.
Child tax credits therefore cannot be used to reach the qualifying-income threshold. If you also earn wages, those wages must meet the applicable criteria; receiving the CCB does not establish that the wages qualify or that the application will be accepted. The eligibility guide explains what to check before applying.
The application also offers benefit and pension income categories. Selecting one does not confirm eligibility. If your circumstances do not clearly match the criteria above, call (877) 431-4134 before sending personal information. Pension income should not be confused with a withdrawal from retirement savings.
Build a budget without counting the same deposit twice
- List the dates and amounts of income you actually expect to receive.
- Set aside money for housing, food, transportation and your children's needs first.
- Add existing commitments and, if you receive a loan offer, every payment and fee in that offer.
- Check what remains after each due date, not just the monthly total.
For example, a monthly budget may balance even though a bill falls due several days before a deposit. That timing gap does not create extra income. If expenses regularly exceed income, another loan adds an obligation to the following month. Review ways to avoid a borrowing cycle before deciding.
What can you do if the CCB is your only income?
A NovaCash application based only on child benefits does not meet the criteria. Depending on the situation, you could ask the creditor for a payment arrangement, postpone a non-essential expense or get help reviewing your budget. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada explains reliable options for help with debt.
If an expected benefit has not arrived or your family circumstances have changed, check your file with the CRA. Borrowing does not resolve a benefit-administration problem. Avoid sending banking information to someone who claims they can speed up a government payment for a fee.
If you have other qualifying income
Your application still requires assessment. Instant bank verification (IBV) provides the banking information you authorize for that review; it does not approve the loan. Before accepting an offer, read the total borrowing cost, fees, payment frequency and contractual due dates. Loan payments do not automatically follow the benefit-payment calendar.
Frequently asked questions
Does NovaCash advance the Canada Child Benefit?
No. NovaCash does not offer a loan based on child tax credits as qualifying income.
Can I add the CCB to my wages to meet the minimum?
Child tax credits are not added to qualifying income. Your other income must meet the applicable criteria, and the application remains subject to assessment.
Do regular CCB payments guarantee acceptance?
No. A predictable benefit does not guarantee credit or replace the lender's criteria.
