Fast credit: comparing costs and avoiding scams
By NovaCash · Updated September 22, 2026
Calculate the real shortfall, examine total cost and watch for misleading offers before seeking fast credit. Consider a non-borrowing option too.

When a bill hits, the first reflex is speed. The second should be cost. The FCAC compares loans, lines and cards: the fastest product is not the cheapest. To decide whether you need to borrow, see the emergency guide. Here the aim is to keep a $400 shortfall from becoming three months of instalments.
The real cost of "fast money"
Add interest, fees, and what you will no longer afford after the withdrawal. A calculator helps. At NovaCash, the public estimate uses a 6-month window and the periodic rate for the chosen frequency, excluding monthly membership fees. The offer confirms the total. A payday loan, where allowed, often costs far more for two weeks: FCAC's $300 for 14 days example shows $42 in charges versus a few dollars on a line of credit. Caps vary by province; Quebec has its own rules. Check the lender.
Before you borrow
- Write the missing amount, not a "comfortable" amount.
- List what can wait 7 days.
- Ask a creditor for time, a pay advance, a dated family loan.
- If a loan is still needed, compare the instalment to the next paycheque, not to the advertised rate.
Credit cards on minimum payment dig too. A cash advance is often costlier than a purchase. Read the fee section. Those fees are in the contract.
Scams and red flags
No serious lender asks for bank passwords by email. NovaCash describes a Flinks connection inside the IBV path, not a password in chat. Be wary of lenders who treat acceptance as automatic, of fees payable before any payout, and lenders without verifiable Canadian details. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre publishes alerts. If unsure, hang up and call the published (877) 431-4134.
NovaCash, with no "secret"
Published criteria, amounts $300 to $2,000, review without a credit-bureau enquiry, IBV, chosen frequency, open loan. No hidden programme, and no promised score rebuild. If you do not qualify, a second form does not change that. A budget office remains the most useful plan B.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a trick to get accepted faster?
A complete file, an account that already receives pay, and an amount you can repay.
Is a credit card always cheaper?
No. Compare total cost of borrowing over the real period.
Can I borrow to repay other fast credit?
Taking another loan to repay the first one usually deepens the hole. Talk first to an accredited credit counsellor.
